COTACACHI. – Swimming in a volcanic crater, deep within the clear waters of the Cotacachi-Cayapas National Park, will be the natural and tourist attraction enjoyed by athletes attending the 2025 edition. The event, organized by the Municipality of Cotacachi in conjunction with the Cotacachi Public Renewable Energy and Tourism Company (EP), and with technical support from the La Candelaria Sports Center, will take place on Sunday, July 13th, starting at 6:00 am
The 28th Ciucocha International Swimming Crossing seeks to promote tourism, adventure sports, and a sense of community with nature in one of the province’s most iconic settings. Swimmers of various categories will demonstrate their skill and endurance in volcanic waters, surrounded by a unique landscape.
The crossing will include all necessary safety measures, with the support of technical personnel and response entities to ensure the safety of participants.
Cuicocha Lagoon is one of the most visited lagoons in the country. Here, you can also enjoy hiking, delicious cuisine, and local crafts. The Cuicocha Lagoon Crossing was held for the first time in 1996, the only open-water competition in the country.
Starting in 2023, the Living Well Administration has been committed to making the competition international, welcoming competitors from Brazil, the United States, Venezuela, and Colombia.
In recent years, athletes as young as 7 years old, senior citizens, and people with disabilities who are members of nationally and internationally recognized clubs have participated. They prepare physically and mentally for several months to participate in this challenge.
